Main tasks of Lanyang branch station include selective breeding and improvement of cultivation techniques for main horticultural crops in Yilan district. We aim to achieve diversification of agricultural products, increasing quality, adjustment of productive period, lowering production costs, and open up sales distribution.

In terms of vegetables, we have released bred heat-resistant variety of tomato, Hualien Asveg 5, and β-carotene rich Hualien Asveg 13. In addition, we have bred a high-yielded variety with good quality of green onion, Lanyang No.1, and a heat-resistant variety of green onion, named Futsun-Lanyang 3. A cultivated system using tissue culture is set up for virus-free healthy green onion, and this can increase yield up to 25%. We have also developed techniques of genetic identification for green onion. Except green onion, we have developed a cultivating technique using plug trays for short-term vegetables such as Chinese cabbage. It can increase yield and quality. In addition to that, we have also developed new species of vegetables such as water cress, and red stalk water spinach.

Green onion, Lanyang 1 has high yield, long blanched stem, and good quality.

We have a variety of breed cat-tail willow, named Lan-yang 1, characterized as large flower buds and beautiful red color, and we have developed processing and staining techniques for flower buds after harvesting, giving cat-tail willow a variety of looks for better export. A technique to regulate the productive duration of flower-quince's blossom increase economic values for cultivating flower- quince. Besides, we have collected and explored native plants such as pratia ( Pratia nummularia ), Ficus vaccinioides , common melastoma ( Bredia oldhamii Hooker f.), formosan torenia ( Torenia concolor Lindley var. formosana Yamazaki), Hypericum formosanum , and so on. These native plants are for appreciation having great commercial values. We have also successfully planted aquatic plants into small to medium sizes pots, including blue waterhyssop ( Bacopa carolineana ), creeping burrhead ( Echinodorus cordifolius ), dwarf papyus ( Cyperus haspan ) and so on. Lycoris aurea , a native herb with bulbous roots had become extinct, and we began to recover this kind of herbs since 1997 in I-Lan area. Recovery area covers townships of Nan-ao, Datong , Dongshan, Su-ao, Luodong, and northeast coast . Recovery tasks have been completed in previously listed townships.

Regarding to fruit trees, we have assisted to set up the paraffin-grafting technique for the production of pears, brand named “General's Pear”. In addition, we have brought in a strain of peach, named Tai-nong sweet peach, which is suitable for cultivation on flat ground with low chilling requirement. Some strains of citrus such as Fremont tangerine have also been brought in for farmers that these kinds of tangerine are excellent strains giving high yield, early maturation, and high quality. All these works have significantly increase farmers' income. We also have set up a productive system for virus-free of Kumquat, fertilization management, and techniques of comprehensive blight prevention that all these allow a sustainable development of kumquat cultivation, and increase its industrial competitiveness.
